Text & English Translation Dixit Dominus Domino meo: sede a dextris meis. Donec ponam inimicos tuos: scabellum pedum tuorum. Virgam virtutis tuae emittet Dominus ex Sion: dominare in medio inimicorum tuorum. Tecum principium in die virtutis tuae: in splendoribus sanctorum ex utero ante luciferum genui te. Juravit Dominus et non pænitebit eum: tu es sacerdos in æternum secundum ordinem Melchisedech. Dominus a dextris tuis: confregit in die iræ suæ reges. Iudicabit in nationonibus implebit ruinas: conquassabit capita in terra multorum. De torrente in via bibet: propterea exaltabit caput. Gloria Patri et Filio: et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc et semper: et in sæcula sæculorum. Amen. The Lord said to my Lord: Sit thou at my right hand. Until I make thy enemies: a footstool at thy feet. The Lord will send forth the sceptere of thy power out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thy enemies. With thee is the sovereignty in the day of thy strength: in the brightness of the saints from the womb before the morning star I have begotten thee. The Lord hath sworn and he will not repent: thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchisedech. The Lord at thy right hand: hath broken kings in the day of his wrath. He shall judge among the nations, he shall fill with ruins: he shall crush the heads in the land of many. He shall drink of the torrent in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head. Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Text & English Translation Concinant linguæ verbum bonum, verbum melleum, verbum lacteum; iubilent corda, stillent labia dulcedinem amoris divini, et gaudio cuncta exiliant tanto irradiata Mariæ plaendore. Frondeant arbores, floreant lilia, rubeant rosæ, germinant campi, rideant prata. Surgat Auster, perflent venti, flumina plaudant, resonent valles cantibus avium. Vos principes cæli, pompa solemni ducite choreas, agite triumphum, dum nos in terris modulantes ter canimus himnum. Te laudamus, te benedicimus, te adoramus, virgo fæconda, intacta sponsa, casta puerpera; gaudia matris habens, O Maria, cum virginitatis honore. Te laudamus, O Maria, te benedicimus, O Maria, te adoramus, O Maria. Let tongues soound a good word, a honeyed word, a milky word; let hearts rejoice, let lips drip the sweetness of divine love, and, filled with joy, let them be gladdened because of Mary’s radiant splendor. Let trees put forth leaves, let lilies flowers, let roses grow red, let the fields bud, let the meadows laugh. Let the South Wind arise, let the winds blow, let the rivers rejoice, let the valleys resound with the songs of birds. You princes of heaven, lead your choirs in a solemn procession, celebrate a triumph, while we musicians on earth sing a hymn: We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, fertile virgin, untouched spouse, chaste child-bearer. You have the joys of a mother, O Mary, with the honor of virginity. We praise you, O Mary, we bless you, O Mary, we adore you, O Mary.

Text & English Transalation Laudate pueri Dominum: laudate nomen Domini. Amen. Praise ye the Lord, ye children: praise the name of the Lord. Blessed be the name of the Lord: from henceforth now and for ever. From the rising of the sun unto its going down: the name of the Lord is worthy of praise. The Lord is high above all nations: and his glory above the heavens. Who is as the Lord our God who dwelleth on high: and looks down on the low things in heaven and in earth? Raising up the needy from the earth: and lifting up the poor out of the dunghill. That he may place him with princes: with the princes of his people. Who maketh for a barren women a home: the joyful mother of children. Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

Text & Translation O quam bonus es, O quam suavis, O quam jocundus, mi Jesu; O quam benigna es, O quam dulcis, quam deliciosa, O Maria, diligenti, suspiranti, possidenti, degustanti te. O me felicem, O me beatum. Hinc pascor a vulnere, hinc lactor ab ubere, quo me vertam nescio. In vulnere vita, in ubere salus, in vulnere quies, in ubere pax, in vulnere nectar, in ubere favum, in vulnere jubilus, in ubere gaudium, in vulnere Jesus, in ubere, Virgo. O me felicem, O me beatum, quo me vertam nescio. Sanguis emundat, lac me purificat, sanguis me recreat, lac refocillat, sanguis inebriat, lac me lætificat. O vulnera, O ubera, O sanguis, O lac, aurea vulnera, ubera dulcia. Sanguis amabilis, nectare dulcior, manna jucundior. Lac exoptabile, melle suavior, favo nobilus. Te amo, te diligo, te cupio, te volo, te sitio, te quæro, te bibo, te gusto. O me felicem, O me beatum. Te amo, te diligo, te cupio, te volo, te sitio, te quæro, te bibo, te gusto. O me felicem, O me beatum, quo me vertam nescio. Hoc sanguine pascar, hoc lacte reficiar, in vulnere vivam, in ubere moriar. O potus, O risus, O gaudium, O felix vita, beata mors. O how good you are, o how soft, o how joyful, my Jesus. O how kind you are, o how sweet, o how delightful, o Mary. O how good, how kind, how soft, how sweet, how joyful you are Jesus, how delightful you are Mary, to the one who seeks and sighs for, possesses and tastes you.. O happy, blessed me. Now I graze from his wound; now I nurse at her breast; I do not know where to turn next. In his wound is life; in her breast, salvation; in his wound, quiet; in her breast, peace; in his wound, nectar; in her breast, honey; in his wound, rejoicing; in her breast, joy; in the wound of Jesus; in the breast, O Virgin. O happy, blessed me; I do not know where to turn next. His blood saves me; her milk purifies me; his blood revives me, her milk restores me; his blood inebriates me; her milk makes me joyous. O wounds, O breasts, O milk, golden wounds, sweet breasts. O lovable blood, sweeter than nectar, happier than manna. Desirable milk, sweeter than honey, more refined than the honeycomb. I love you, I desire you, I want you, I thirst for you, I seek you, I drink you, I enjoy you. O happy, blessed me. I love you, I desire you, I want you, I thirst for you, I seek you, I drink you, I enjoy you. O happy, blessed me, I do not know where to turn next. May I feed on this blood, may I be refreshed by this milk, may I live in His wound, may I die in her breast. O drink, O food, O laughter, O joy; O happy life, blessed death.

Text & Translation Laetatus sum in his quae dicta sunt mihi: in domum Domini ibimus. Stantes erant pedes nostri: in atriis tuis Ierusalem. Propter domum Domini Dei nostri: quaesivi bona tibi. Gloria Patri et Filio : et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio et nunc et semper: et in secula seculorum. Amen. I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: We shall go into the house of the Lord. Our feet were standing: in thy courts, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem, which is built as a city: that is compact together. For thither did the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord: the testimony of Israel, to praise the name of the Lord. Because their seats have sat in judgment: seats upon the house of David. Pray ye for the peace of Jerusalem: And abundance for them that love thee. Let peace be in thy strength: and abundance in thy towers. For the sake of my brothers and my neighbors: I spoke peace of thee. For the sake of the house of the Lord our God: I have sought good things for thee. Glory be to the Father and to the Son : and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, now, and for ever: world without end. Amen.

Opecitur navicula fluctibus, intrant aquæ in animam nostram. Curre, Maria, succurre, stella Maris, O clemens, O pia, succurre, Maria. O qualis tempesta, heu miseri, demergit nos, absorbet nos, succurre, O pia, succurre, O Maria. Perimus, salva nos, curre, O Maria, O clemens, O pia, succurre, Maria. Stella maris, impera venti, impera mari, sileant fluctus, desinat luctus, fiat magna tranquillitas. Curre, lux, O salutaris fida dux, O stella maris, O clemens, O pia, succurre, Maria. We came upon high seas, and there was great storm; the winds blew, the North Wind and the spirit of the storm arose. Hurry Mary, help us, star of the sea, the great sea is swallowing us. Its waves are raised up, they arise to heaven and descend to the abysses. O merciful, O good Mary, hasten to help us. Our ship founders in the waves; the waters enter into our soul. Hurry Mary, help us, star of the sea; O merciful, O good Mary, run to aid us. O what a tempest, O we miserable ones, overcomes us and swallows us; help us, O good one, hurry to help us, O Mary. We are perishing, save us, hurry, O Mary, O merciful one, O good one, hurry to help us, Mary. Star of the sea, command the wind, command the sea, let the waves be silent, let the waters desist, let there be great calm. Hurry, you light, O faithful guide to salvation, O star of the sea, O merciful one, O good Mary, help us.

Text & English Translation Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum: in vanum laboraverunt qui aedificant eam. Amen. Unless the Lord build the house: they labor in vain that build it. Unless the Lord keep the city: he watcheth in vain that keepeth it. It is vain for you to rise before dawn: rise after you have rested, you who eat the bread of sorrow. When He shall give sleep to His beloved: behold the inheritance of the Lord are children: the reward, the fruit of the womb. As arrows in the hand of the mighty: so are the children of them that have been shaken. Blessed is the man that hath filled the desire with them: he shall not be confounded when he shall speak to his enemies in the gate. Glory be to the Father and to the Son : and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, now, and for ever: world without end. Amen.

O gloriosa domina, excelsa super sidera. O glorious lady, exalted over the stars. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you, blessed art thou among women. O glorious lady, exalted over the stars. Do not fear, Mary, for you have found favor with the Lord; behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. O glorious lady, exalted over the stars. The Lord will give Him the throne of David his ancestor, and He shall reign for all eternity. O glorious lady, exalted over the stars.

Text & English Translation Magnificat: anima mea Dominum. Fecit potentiam in brachio suo: dispersit superbos mente cordis sui. Amen. My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced: in God my Saviour. Because He regarded the lowliness of His handmaiden: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because He that is mighty hath done great things to me: and holy is His name. And His mercy is from generation unto generation: to them that fear Him: He hath shown might in His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich He hath sent away empty. He hath received Israel His servant: being mindful of His mercy. As He spoke to our fathers: to Abraham and to his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, now, and for ever: world without end. Amen.

Text & English Translation Quid miseri, quid faciamus in hac vita, privati vultu tuo, suavissima virgo, clementissima Maria? Invocabitis unigenitum Dei Filium, quem ego genui, quem semper adoro, qui potens fecit, fecit mihi magna, et ipse erit vobiscum in tribulatione, ipse vos exaudiet, ipse vos eripet et glorificabit; clamate ad eum. Invocabimus unigenitum Dei Filium, quem tu genuisti, quem semper adoras, qui potens fecit, fecit tibi magna. Intercedam ego semper pro vobis in cœlis, quos mala tanta præmunt in terris; ne dubietis, filii, ne timeatis dilecti, succurram vobis, resovebo vos, orabo pro vobis. O nos felices, quibus tu sucurris, O nos felices, quos tu resoves, O nos felices, pro quibus tu oras. Alleluia. Salve virgo sancta, salve virgo pulchra, virgo pia, virgo Clemens, virgo dulcis, salve. Alleluia. [The Faithful] What, what shall we miserable ones do in this life, deprived of your gaze, sweetest virgin, most clement Mary? [Mary] You shall invoke the only-born Son of God, Whom I bore, Whom I always adore, the powerful one Who has done great things for me, and He will be with you in your trial, He will hear you, He will save you and glorify you; cry to Him. [The Faithful] We will invoke the only-born Son of God, Whom you bore, Whom you always adore, the powerful one Who has done great things for you. O shining star of the sea, You truly are exalted above the angelic choirs, do not abandon us. [Mary] I will always intercede in heaven for you, who are oppressed on earth by so many evils; do not doubt, my children, nor fear, my beloved; I will help you, I will succor you, I will pray for you. [The Faithful] O happy we whom you help, O happy we whom you aid, O happy we for whom you pray. [Chorus] Alleluia. Hail, holy virgin, hail, lovely virgin, good virgin, merciful virgin, sweet virgin, hail. Alleluia.

about

Recognized during her lifetime as one of the finest composers in Italy, Chiara Margarita Cozzolani spent her entire adult life within the four walls of the musically famous convent of Santa Radegonda in Milan. Contemporary accounts describe the huge crowds that filled the exterior church of the convent to hear the angelic voices of nuns singing Cozzolani's passionate and ecstatic music. On this disc Magnificat has arranged four of Cozzolani's psalm settings, one of her settings of the Magnificat, and six of her motets in the context of Second Vespers for the Feast of Annunciation. Twelve tracks on this recoding are also available as part of the two volume complete works of Cozzolani also available for download and purchase at music.cozzolani.com .
